driving license classes

AM driving license class AM

Two-wheeled mopeds  (including those with a sidecar) with a maximum design speed not exceeding 45 km/h and an electric drive motor or an internal combustion engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3 or a maximum rated continuous power not exceeding 4 kW in the case of electric motors.

Motorcycles  with a maximum design speed of not more than 45 km/h and an electric drive motor or an internal combustion engine with a cylinder capacity of not more than 50 cm3, which additionally have the characteristics of bicycles in terms of usability (bicycles with auxiliary motor).

Three-wheeled mopeds  and four-wheeled light motor vehicles, each with a maximum design speed of not more than 45 km/h and a cylinder capacity of not more than 50 cm3 in the case of spark-ignition engines, a maximum net power of not more than 4 kW in the case of other internal combustion engines or a maximum rated continuous power of not more than 4 kW in the case of electric motors; in addition, in the case of four-wheeled light motor vehicles, the unladen mass must not exceed 350 kg, excluding the mass of the batteries in the case of electric vehicles.

A1driving license class A1

Motorcycles (including those with sidecars)  with a cylinder capacity of up to 125 cm³ and an engine power of not more than 11 kW, where the power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg, and three-wheeled motor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels and a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cm³ for combustion engines or a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and a power of up to 15 kW.

Extension:  Extension to class A2 possible after 2 years. (Only one practical test required for extension)

Minimum age:  16 years
Included class:  AM

A2driving license class A2

Motorcycles (including those with sidecars)  with an engine power not exceeding 35 KW, where the power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0.2 KW/kg, which are not derived from a motorcycle with an engine power exceeding 70 KW

Extension:  Extension to class A possible after 2 years. (Only one practical test required for extension)

Minimum age:  18 years
Included classes:  A1 and AM

A driving license class A

Motorcycles (including those with sidecars)  with a cylinder capacity exceeding 50 cm³ or with a maximum design speed exceeding 45 km/h and

Three-wheeled motor vehicles  with a power exceeding 15 kW and three-wheeled motor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels and a cylinder capacity exceeding 50 cm³ for internal combustion engines or a maximum design speed exceeding 45 km/h and with a power exceeding 15 kW.

Minimum age:  24 years (for direct entry), 20 years (with at least 2 years of previous ownership of class A2)

Included classes:  A2, A1 and AM

B/ BF17driving license class B

Motor vehicles  – excluding motor vehicles of categories AM, A1, A2 and A with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 3 500 kg, which are designed and built to carry no more than eight persons in addition to the driver (including with a trailer with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 750 kg or with a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the combination does not exceed 3 500 kg and, within the country, three-wheeled motor vehicles, but in the case of a motor vehicle with an engine power of more than 15 kW only if the holder of the driving licence is at least 21 years old.

Minimum age:  18 years (17 years for participants in “Accompanied Driving at 17”)

B96 driving license class BE

Vehicle combinations consisting of a towing vehicle in category B and a trailer, with a maximum permissible mass of the trailer exceeding 750 kg and a maximum permissible mass of the vehicle combination exceeding 3 500 kg but not exceeding 4 250 kg.

Minimum age : 18 years (17 years for participants in “Accompanied Driving at 17”), previous possession of driving license class B required
Included  classes : none

BE driving license class BE

Vehicle combinations consisting of a towing vehicle in category B and a trailer or semi-trailer, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the trailer or semi-trailer does not exceed 3 500 kg.

Minimum age:  18 years (17 years for participants in “Accompanied Driving at 17”), previous possession of driving license class B required.
